Facial recognition terminals are evolving into a central component of modern access control systems. As the trade magazine Protector reports, current systems now cover an extremely diverse range of application scenarios – from specialized industry solutions with direct software integration, to flexible all-rounder systems for businesses, to easy-to-install standalone solutions. Three terminal concepts from different manufacturers demonstrate how biometric access control is being implemented in practice today.

The common denominator across all the systems presented is AI-powered facial recognition, designed to virtually eliminate identification errors during access. Anti-spoofing technologies reliably prevent deception attempts using photos, videos, or masks.

The Details

The ID INFO 9000 terminal from Idtronic, developed in cooperation with Facetronic, combines AI-powered 3D facial recognition with liveness detection, QR code, RFID, and NFC. According to the manufacturer, real-time validation occurs in a fraction of a second, with access granted in under one second. A key feature is the automatic facial matching performed with every check-in method – designed to reliably prevent the passing on of cards or codes to third parties. In terms of data protection, the device relies on local data processing on servers in Germany without any cloud requirement, as well as SSL/TLS-encrypted transmission. Thanks to direct interfaces to software solutions such as Magic Line, Virtuagym, Centercom, or Aidoo, including automatic member registration, the system is specifically optimized for fitness studios.

Hikvision positions its DS-K1T344MBFWX-E1 model (Value Series) as a flexible, universal system for businesses and government agencies. Equipped with a 4.5-inch touchscreen, PoE, WiFi, and a wide-angle camera, the terminal identifies individuals in under 0.2 seconds with over 99 percent accuracy. In addition to facial scans, the system also supports fingerprints, PINs, QR codes, and cards. It is IP65-certified for outdoor use and operates within a temperature range of -30°C to +60°C. In terms of data protection, user data is anonymized and stored encrypted using AES 128/256 on non-volatile memory. By default, the system stores only irreversible facial features rather than complete images, which is intended to enable full compliance with GDPR requirements.

Dahua Technology's FACT series is aimed at commercial businesses, schools, and clinics and operates contactlessly. Using proprietary AI, the system identifies individuals, according to the manufacturer, in under 0.3 seconds with 99.5 percent accuracy – even under difficult lighting conditions. The standalone mode reduces wiring effort for installers, with configuration carried out directly via the local touchscreen menu. The series is tested according to the ETSI standard TS 103645 and certified by TÜV Rheinland as fully GDPR-compliant.

Assessment

The three systems presented illustrate a clear trend in access control: biometric methods are becoming increasingly multimodal and industry-specific. While Idtronic specifically targets the fitness studio market with direct software integration, Hikvision offers a broadly applicable universal system for businesses and government agencies. Dahua, in turn, focuses on simple installation in standalone operation while maintaining a high level of certification depth.

Notably, all three manufacturers place great emphasis on data protection – whether through local data processing without cloud requirements, storing irreversible facial features instead of complete images, or external certifications from TÜV Rheinland and ETSI standards. This shows that providers of biometric access solutions view GDPR compliance as a key selling point to address reservations about facial recognition technology in access control.

Practical Tips

  • When selecting a facial recognition terminal, the intended operating environment should be considered: for outdoor areas, IP65 certification and a wide temperature range are relevant, as demonstrated by the Hikvision model.
  • Businesses with existing member management software – such as fitness studios – benefit from terminals with direct interfaces to common systems like Magic Line or Virtuagym.
  • For installations without extensive wiring, standalone operation is recommended, allowing configuration directly via the touchscreen menu.
  • From a data protection perspective, it is advisable to examine the type of data storage used: systems that store only irreversible facial features rather than complete images, along with local data processing without cloud requirements, facilitate GDPR-compliant implementation.
  • External certifications, such as those from TÜV Rheinland or according to the ETSI standard TS 103645, provide additional assurance when assessing a system's data protection compliance.

Outlook

The terminal concepts presented show that facial recognition in access control is evolving from a purely security-focused technology into a process-optimizing tool tailored to specific industries. The combination of AI-powered recognition, anti-spoofing mechanisms, and strict data protection standards is likely to further increase acceptance of biometric access solutions.
