LUGN Security Opens 24/7 Control Center for Drone Security

LUGN Security launches a 24/7 control center in Maastricht-Aachen for drone defense, verification, and remote intervention—now also available in Germany.

What happened?

The Dutch company LUGN Security has officially opened a new control center in the Maastricht-Aachen region. From this location, certified drone pilots operate security drones around the clock at various sites in the Netherlands, Belgium, and, as of recently, also in Germany. The opening ceremony was conducted by Prince Constantijn of Orange-Nassau. With the new control center, LUGN Security now covers large parts of Northwestern Europe.

The Details

LUGN Security's range of services includes drone defense, drone verification, remote interventions, and autonomous patrol flights. Thanks to expanded permits, the company is now also offering its services in Germany, particularly in the federal states bordering the Netherlands.

Data protection is a central issue in drone surveillance. LUGN Security addresses this with a specially developed GDPR filter: the drones capture only security-relevant areas, while all other image areas are automatically anonymized.

The company's clients to date include Dutch Railways, the Dutch Ministry of Defence, as well as industrial companies and operators of critical infrastructure (CRITIS) in the Netherlands. Building on this experience, LUGN Security also sees itself as well positioned for the German market.

According to co-founder Dirk Bekke, alarm responses within three minutes are intended to have a preventive effect. Patrol flights are carried out remotely and in an automated manner. Co-founder Alex Hermans emphasizes that hybrid threats and new security requirements are transforming the security industry. In the Netherlands, the company already flies daily for clients, monitoring both ground-based facilities and the airspace above them.

LUGN Security was founded in 2021 and has developed into a company with national and cross-border operations in the Euregio. The headquarters remains in Heerlen.

Context

Dirk Bekke sums up the company's ambition as follows: "Security must become smarter and faster. This is not achieved by replacing security personnel, but by supporting them." This statement illustrates the trend in the security industry to view drone technology not as a replacement, but as a complement to existing security concepts.

The expansion into Germany and Belgium shows that cross-border security services in the area of drone defense and airspace protection are becoming increasingly important. Especially for operators of critical infrastructure, industrial companies, and public sector clients, the combination of drone verification, remote interventions, and automated patrol flights could become a relevant component of security concepts. The handling of hybrid threats is also increasingly coming into focus within the security industry, as Alex Hermans explicitly points out.

Practical Tips

  • Operators of critical infrastructure and industrial companies in regions bordering the Netherlands should assess whether cross-border drone security services could be suitable for their own location.
  • When selecting a drone surveillance provider, it is advisable to closely examine the data protection compliance of the technology used, for example through automated anonymization filters.
  • Companies should include response times for alarm notifications as a concrete criterion in tenders or provider comparisons, since rapid interventions can reportedly have a preventive effect, according to LUGN Security.
  • The combination of automated patrol flights and remote-controlled intervention can relieve existing security personnel, but it does not fully replace them.

Outlook

With the new control center in the Maastricht-Aachen region, LUGN Security is positioning itself for growth beyond the Netherlands' national borders. The expanded permits for Germany, particularly in the neighboring federal states, suggest that the company intends to further expand its market presence in the Euregio. Given the growing relevance of hybrid threats for security decision-makers, the topic of drone security and airspace protection is likely to gain further importance for other providers and regions as well.
