Drop safe for shops and bakeries: a buyer's checklist
In a shop or bakery the day's takings rarely go straight to the bank. Between closing time and the deposit, the cash sits somewhere: in the till, in a cash box or in a safe. A drop safe is built for exactly that window. Below are the points that matter when buying one, using two models from our range as examples.
1. Drop safe or ordinary safe?
An ordinary safe has to be opened to put anything in, so everyone who banks cash needs the code or key. A drop safe has its own deposit opening: staff drop envelopes or notes in without opening the door. Only the person with the code or key can take money out. An anti-fishing barrier behind the opening stops cash being pulled back out. Background: What is a drop safe?.
2. Slot or flap?
- Slot: a narrow, fixed opening. On the deposit safe with slot and PIN code (10102) it measures 20 x 150 mm (h x w), suitable for notes and flat envelopes.
- Flap: a flap with a receiving chamber behind it. On the deposit safe with flap (10123) the opening is 70 x 225 mm with a depth of 190 mm, so a thicker envelope fits in one go.
Loose notes per shift: a slot is usually enough. Takings collected per till in an envelope or bag: a flap is more practical. In detail: Deposit flap vs. letter slot.
3. PIN code or key?
The 10102 has an electronic PIN lock for 2 users and comes with 2 emergency keys. The 10123 has a double-bit key lock with 2 keys. A code avoids keys being passed around; a key lock needs no battery. Decide who only deposits and who may open.
4. Security level and anchoring
Both models are built to VDMA 24992, security level A, with a 3 mm body and a 6 mm door. The insurance guide value for both is approx. EUR 1,500 in cash; the amount that applies to your business is set by your insurer. If more cash regularly sits in the safe before banking, look at security level B models in the same category. Both safes can be anchored to the floor and back wall, fixings included. Weight alone (13.4 kg and 23.2 kg) does not stop the safe being carried off; anchoring does.
