Drop Safe for the Car Dealership: Where Vehicle Keys and the Day's Cash Should Go at Closing Time

Car dealerships, garages and tyre centres tend to leave two things lying about that burglars go looking for on purpose: vehicle keys and the day's cash. Two police reports from the past few months show how that plays out – and what a car dealership drop safe with a drop flap changes about it.

What burglars actually take from a dealership

Rülzheim (Palatinate), night of 27 July 2026: Burglars got into a car dealership, forced open several locked containers and made off with the vehicle keys kept inside. With one of those keys they drove a VW Golf GTI worth a low five-figure sum off the premises. (Source: Polizeidirektion Landau, the police directorate for Landau, as reported in Wochenblatt-Reporter Germersheim)

Keltern-Ellmendingen (Enzkreis), 23/24 December 2025: The culprits ripped a wall-mounted safe off the wall and carried it away, cash in the mid three-figure range included. Damage to property came to about 2,000 euros, and the safe was later found broken open. (Source: Polizeipräsidium Pforzheim, the Pforzheim police headquarters, as reported by ka-news)

There is a pattern to both cases: the haul was sitting where staff need it during the day – on the counter, in the key cabinet, in a drawer. Whoever holds the keys holds the car. And a safe that has not been anchored properly simply goes out the door with the burglars.

One safe for two jobs

At the end of the day a dealership has two things to lock away:

  1. Vehicle keys for customer cars and demonstrators, along with keys that come in through the out-of-hours drop-off in the evening.
  2. The day's takings from the workshop, parts sales and cash payments, often with receipts and handover notes attached.

Back in 2017 the trade journal Krafthand was already describing how workshops need an answer for both situations: managing keys during opening hours and taking them in safely outside those hours.

A car dealership drop safe with a drop flap handles this without staff needing a key of their own: service advisers, workshop reception and the sales team put key rings, cash pouches or envelopes through the flap. An anti-fishing guard stops anyone reaching back in from outside. Only those holding a safe key can open it – usually the owner, the branch manager and a deputy.

It works on the same principle as the drop safe with drop flap, which has been the norm in hospitality and retail for years.

Points to check before buying

How big is the flap? A car key with a fob and a handover slip takes up more space than a banknote. The drop flap on the car dealership safe 101233 measures 70 × 225 mm – enough for cash pouches, end-of-day envelopes and key rings.

How many safe keys? Annual leave or sick days must not hold up the cashing-up. Model 101233 comes with three double-bit keys, model 10125 with two. If you would rather do without keys altogether, the restaurant safe with PIN code is the same build with a drop flap.

In at the front, out at the back. On model 10125, items go in at the front and come out at the rear. That suits a safe set into a wall between the reception area and the office: staff can only get at the flap, while the door opens into the office.

Build and security level. The models named here are built to VDMA 24992 (a German VDMA standard sheet for safes) for security level A, single-walled with a 3 mm body and a 6 mm door, external dimensions 450 × 280 × 300 mm, weight 23–24 kg. This is a deposit safe: it guards against access by staff, customers and opportunist thieves and makes sure nothing is left lying around overnight. It is not a high-security safe built to withstand a break-in with heavy tools.

Anchoring. The Keltern case shows why anchoring is not an optional extra. A 23–24 kg safe can be carried – so it needs to be fixed to the wall and floor with the fixing material supplied, ideally in a room customers never enter.

Insurance. How much cash and which keys an insurer will cover in which safe is set out in the individual policy. For the models named here, an insurance rating of up to about 1,500 euros serves as a guide value, depending on the insurer. Anyone wanting to secure high-value vehicle keys or larger cash balances should check the requirements with their insurer first – the same advice the police and the German chambers of industry and commerce (IHK) give in their guidance for retailers.

The daily routine in the dealership

  • During the day: Any key not in use right now goes through the flap. No key board on the counter, no drawer.
  • Cash payments: Anything over the till limit is dropped in straight away, receipt included. Set the limit in the till system and there is nothing left to rely on.
  • Out-of-hours drop-off: Customers who leave their car after closing time put the key into the safe – either the dealership drop safe inside the building or a separate key safe on the outside wall.
  • In the morning: A key holder opens up, hands the vehicle keys out to the workshop and posts the cash.
  • In a robbery: Staff cannot open the safe because they have no key. For businesses covered by DGUV Vorschrift 25 (a German accident-insurance regulation), that is a requirement anyway – more on this in the article Drop safes and DGUV Regulation 25.

In short

Burglars in a dealership are after keys and cash, not tyres. A car dealership drop safe with a drop flap clears both off the counter without every member of the team needing a safe key. Three things decide it: a flap wide enough for a key ring, enough safe keys to cover absences, and solid anchoring in a room with no customer traffic.
